Oh, my gosh! Thank you so much! My laptop just died today (BSOD and all) and my husband and I were discussing that I'm due to renew here anyway, so imagine my surprise to find the email this afternoon! Day just got much brighter, THANK YOU! |

Who ever purchased a full year membership for me, thank you so much for being so kind. Here's proof that there's an abundance of generous people in this world. Barry |

I was pleasantly surprised by this very kind gesture! It's something you don't experience every day and I really appreciate it. |
Jennifer |
To the person who randomly renewed my membership...a heartfelt thank you. In the last two months my father has been diagnosed with terminal cancer, and my mom took a bad fall fracturing her upper arm and tearing her rotater cuff...I'm a single mom of two supporting my kids and helping my parents financially. Your gift was one of the best things that has happened to me in a long time. Thank you :) |

This reinforces my faith in the basic goodness of humanity. |

Thank you so much for renewing my membership! We have really had to cut back this year. Business is not good. So thank you for your kindness!! |
Jameel |
I am going through a rough patch and although I planned to renew, was not sure when I would be able to. This random act of kindness really surprised and touched me, and I will return the favor as soon as I am able. Whoever you are, thank you very, very much! And also, thank you Ryan for allowing for this :) |
Alex |
When I got the email telling me my membership had been renewed by an act of random kindness, really made my day! As a student well in to his overdraft I wasn't going to renew and knew I was going to miss having these amazing wallpapers. Huge thank you to whoever donated mine, and to everyone else that pays forward! I'll be doing the same when the next bit of student loan comes in :) |

Hello there, I just want to say thank you to whoever it was that paid for a year renewal for me. I love these wallpapers. |
LillyO |
Hello! I just renewed my membership and added $7 to the renewal because I didn't see how to use PayPal on the Pay It Forward screen, so I opted to tack it onto my renewal. Food for thought in the future. |
Matt |
Thank you to whoever purchased one of these memberships because it was a very big surprise to me to receive one. |
Dave |
Let's get a hint of the upcoming wallpaper. Abstract, landscape, planetscape, all of the above? |
p1t0u |
Hey Ryan, not to nit pick but on the home page you say you choose the random user from users with 1 week left while on the pay it forward page you say users with less than 1 year left. |
Ryan |
Very generous of you AJ! Thank you!! |
AJ |
To whoever gets one of the renewals I just bought, You're welcome! (I actually feel kind of guilty having a lifetime membership, I think it is kind of cheap for the value!) |
Chris |
It's nice to see a forum of appreciative people who received the gift of Ryan's artwork. I hope whomever got my Pay it Forward was someone in a tight spot, who maybe was not going to renew, and now they can. I'm glad to do it, and I hope you all have a great holiday =) |
Michael |
Thank you so much! So shines a good deed in a weary world. |

I think this is a wonderful idea, and once I get enough money, I'll be glad to help someone out. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. |

Simon |
i've never really understood those who waste their money on buying one year memberships... Lifetime is the way forward. As long as Ryan keeps making his impressive work, then why shouldn't you come back?? Ryan, hope you live long and good!! For both of our sakes! :D |
Fran |
Thanks to the anonymous benefactor who [aid my membership this year. I shall be a benefactor in turn. Thanks also to Ryan: you have decorated the background to all my machines since Fluorescence first came out. Happy Holidays All. |

I once stumbled upon your site by accident in 1998. I can't remember how I managed to fall into your awesome little corner of the web, but I just wanted to say that it is good to be back. I think of this site often due the graphics have ALWAYS been superb in design! Keep up the fantastic artwork my friend! You truly have a gift! |

Supermom |
Just wanted you to know how much I enjoy your work - the first thing I do on any new computer is come and download my favorites to add to my desktop collection so that my wallpaper always gets comments no matter where I am. Was browsing tonight and inspired, and I just LOVE the idea of sharing your work with someone who may be a little short at the moment. Keep it up, you are awesome! |
Wayde |
Thank you so much to whomever purchased my renewal! I love this site and use it often. I'll be paying it forward for another person to keep the love rolling along. |
Chris |
After two years of paying one year at a time and than almost 5 years before that of waiting for some more pickle jar additions I said hell with it and joined the life time members club. I can't get enough of Ryan's work |
Derrick H. |
I really like the what you did with the Fluorescence white in the pickle jar. Any chance of having that in 1680x1050 any time soon? |
Walo |

Thank you for your kindess. It would be a pleasure to do the same for another. The old saying is true, "What goes around comes around". I sincerely hope to see other institutions incorporate this concept. Bravo DB |

Derrick S. |

Dean |
Both the Pay It Forward and Walo's idea for a monthly drawing! Can't recall when I had this much fun spending money :) |
Will |
I think this is an amazing idea. It helps you, and is a random act of kindness for someone else. |
Shane |
This was the highlight of my day...and as soon as I get paid next month, I'm going to do the same. Thank you. ^^ |
Walo |
Something struck up to me! i know there are people out there who have visited the free db gallery for years now(I know, I've been there) and are either hesitant, don't have any way of online payment, are low on cash, etc. So I thought now that there's Pay it Forward why don't we make a monthly drawing(or any other way) to give a 1 year membership to a lucky free gallery visitor. Just thinking. |
Yanthor |
Your "pay it forward" idea is flawlessly brilliant. I love it when good solid capitalism is perfectly united with building the better parts of our nature. This is one of those excellent business ideas that is the best union of both goals. |
Greg in KC |
Good point on the work... I'll submit for a pay it forward membership for someone to give you something else to do... lol. Good luck with the server migration. |
Ryan |
I enjoy working Greg. I've been laying in bed for the past four weeks so I really need to be doing something right now. I am hoping the new site will go live sometime in August. |
Greg in KC |
Sounds good, Ryan... I don't want to make extra work for you... When is the new server transition looking like it will happen? |
Ryan |
No PayPal option at the moment. I will probably add that today. Until my new server is set up I am doing all PayPal transactions by hand so I will have to ring up a way for me to do it on the back end. I will post on the main page when it's up and running. PS. Thanks Walo!! |
Greg in KC |
Maybe I'm dense, but I didn't see an option to do Pay It Forward with Paypal. Is that option not available at the moment? Thanks, Greg in KC |
Walo |
Well I've decided to give it a test drive. I hope somebody enjoys it. |
Ryan |
At this point I do not track that sort of info. I am going to be migrating to a new server in the near future and will be implementing a new login system (just about everything will be new really). I will then probably use number of logins (and maybe others) as criteria for selection. |
Walo |
the image rating idea I think it may be innacurate as some people may forget to rate(happens to me sometimes) or may choose not to rate. A logon date check will be the most accurate way(if logon date data is stored of course) |
Ryan |
I was thinking about that this morning Walo. I think what I might do is restrict the pool further to people who have rated an image in the past 30 days. I think this would ensure that the gift went to someone who was an active member. The accept/decline functionality I will leave alone until I have migrated to my new server. |
Walo |
This gives a new meaning to donations, knowing that you are helping a fellow member in the process. I doubt this will open a can of worms as it is totally voluntary, although I agree that an Accept or decline option should be added to cover all bases for people who don't want to receive such gifts. But I have a doubt, what if a gift is sent to an inactive member? maybe someone who purchased a membership to download the library and then never came back again and forgot about the page. The gift would be lost there. Otherwise I think it's an awesome idea. |
Ryan |
There is no automated way to decline a gift right now. I will be happy to reset someone's account for them if they contact me though. I can just run the "random user" program and apply the gift elsewhere. |
Blaine |
I hope this doesn't open up a can of worms, but is it possible to decline one of these complimentary memberships? |
Idiom |
This is quite possibly brilliant - like the tip jar, but with random acts of kindness thrown in! |
Mike |
I can't wait to see the latest :D I love when you rework the older wallpapers! |
