Description

The Plant Factory is an incredibly powerful addition to my 3D arsenal. I just need to spend a few hours every day trying to learn exactly what everything does. This piece is the result of one such exploration. The trees looks quite alien, I agree, but I wanted to see what that would look like rendered.

I will most likely most another version of this in the near future, but I thought it looked interesting enough to share as is. Let me know what you think!

For some reason, your pickle jar version is better (to me) than the gallery version. A little more detail, less light intrusion. A much softer feeling, yet still powerful.

  2. Chris [lifer]

Thank you for making such a powerful image. It reminds me of dusk on the west coast, when the colour of the sky seemed to saturate the air.

  3. Paul [nonmonthly]

For some reason the dual screen is more pleasing to the eyes. I think it’s the wider angled view.

  4. Mangoman [lifer]

Actually, the trees appear to be as the Michigan Cherry Tree; I know – I had to pick ’em when I was young. ‘Ceppin, they more resemble those that were part of an old, old orchard from a 130-year-old farm that weren’t taken care of anymore; all gnarled and bent, as these guys are, yet still beautiful and cool-looking in their own way. Think about that.

The sun light is what really makes this image. It reminds me of how the lighting would come over the mountains when I lived in Montana. I honestly did not notice the trees looking alien until I read the comments. I don’t think they look alien at all.

  6. John [lifer]

It’s always nice to see some sun remaining on the desktop as the skies turn cloudy for the next few months. =)

  7. Peter [nonmonthly]

The trees look very good. I wouldn’t say alien at all!

  8. Mario Cari [nonmonthly]

A fine render even if it took hours. This is beautiful in the rays of sunshine

  9. Byron [lifer]

Fall is my favorite season of the year, and this image fits it perfectly. All I need to do now is add some cawing crow sound effects to have the Fall colors and sounds in doors. Thanks.

  10. Zach [lifer]

Hi Ryan. I actually prefer version 1 (pickle jar) over the current render. I thought that it felt more like a peaceful autumn afternoon (primarily due to the lighting). Though it is a bit more grainy than the new version, it speaks to me more.

  11. Jenanne [lifer]

Love this render! Perfect timing, too, since I just put all your autumn images into rotation for the coming season. My only quibble is that three of the trees on the left hand side all end at the same height; since the very top branches are bare it’s more noticeable than it otherwise would be. Other than that, great!

  12. Infirnex [lifer]

A night version with moonlight would be amazing. Overall a good work here.

  13. Matt [lifer]

How about a pickle jar version, “Silver Hour” with moonlight?

  14. Ryan

I thought it was a bit too glaring in the first version.

  15. Ítalo [lifer]

It is more opaque, loses luminosity.

I’ve added a new version this morning. The changes are subtle, mainly I’ve varied up the foliage color and added a few taller trees to the mix. I also set the “atmosphere quality” settings much higher than the first version so the light beams should be less noisy. The downside is the image took 3 times as long to render. :-(Let me know what you think!

I save my favorite works to my desktop and/or DB file. This is beautiful. When you can take a limited amount of color and make it affect your senses like this… you’re a Master; Ryan!

This piece looks great on my dual screen! Nice work!

  19. sundogvet [lifer]

This is such an improvement on what was already good art. The dappled light on the branches really shows up nicely, and the branches finally look properly round or knobby. I’ll bet this program would really improve images like Singularity Rising or Satori (hint! hint!).

  20. Jason [lifer]

It really is. I love it.

  21. Brett [nonmonthly]

I love it! nice and bright now the winter days are closing in!

  22. Ryan

Thanks guys! I hope to have v.2 ready today or tomorrow!

  23. betsey [lifer]

    beautiful…

  24. Chris [lifer]

I love it. The lighting makes this picture.

I do agree, a little more work on the plants is needed – they’re still a bit unnatural – or strange, anyway.

Here in Texas, you can see the prevailing wind effect on trees; they look just like some of those in your image, no leaves on one side as they grow away from the wind direction. A little work there would lend even more to this beautiful image.

  25. BobC [lifer]

I also like this a lot. I love the lighting effect, so bright that you can’t see what is much beyond the foreground trees. I like the color palette – red and gold with just a touch of green. Not sure that the sun rays worked out the way they were intended – more like looking through a veil?

  26. Steve [lifer]

Ryan, I really love this piece. Absolutely fantastic coloring along with light manipulation. It’s going on my desktop and will be there for quite awhile!

  27. Littlemom [lifer]

Wow Ryan this is so beautiful. Autumn is my favorite season of the year. Great render to have up, this time of year, thanks.

  28. Ryan

Yes there are more than one light source but they are all pointing in (generally) the same direction. I had to get creative with my light sources to fill such a wide frame.

  29. harks [nonmonthly]

Thank you! This looks great on my new gold MacBook. It’s perfect for it. Keep up the good work!

  30. Angelique [lifer]

Beautiful! Is there more than one light source? The rays of light are coming from the right but then there are the concentrations of light near the center of the picture and in the upper right corner.

  31. Zach [lifer]

Wow, I really like this one, Ryan. I had Cloud Canyon as my background for a while, and really love the soft, muted glow of light in it (and this one). It seems a little grainy to me, but overall, I enjoy it!
