Not only is this "early work" but it is actually one of my first images. This one is in the 1998 gallery but it was actually done in 1994/95 (somewhere around there).

@Ryan - Definitely not, i vividly remember at least two or three other websites back then that leaned heavily on this sort of thing. Unlike DB, i don't think any of them are still alive today, which probably proves a point about versatility...

I like this one in particular though.

I really like this one, too. However, I was surprised to discover it's only 800 x 600, not 1152 x 864. Many of the earliest works are like that -- smaller than labeled.

Is it appropriate for a desktop background? No. Is it art? Most certainly! There's a hidden complexity that's only picked up on close inspection. Imagine having something like this at the centre of a marble hidden in a new render as an "easter egg"? ;)

Admittedly, my eyes do hurt a little after a while, though..

"These things exist!"
I learned recently that there is such a thing as a planet without an orbit. Depending on how it was formed, it could be a protostar that never became massive enough to fire up the typical heat- and light-producing reactions, or a castoff from a new star's protoplanetary disc. The first kind are "sub-brown dwarves", the second sometimes called "rogue planets".

I've loved this image for years; this one and "The Brink" (also an early work) just make me 'hear' and 'feel' the silence of things drifting in the aftermath of a wordless creation... And then I found out they're real. Ryan, either you're more smarter than me (not hard to do) or you've made some outrageously good guesses!

I just get lost in this image. Transported to a planet in some distant star system, feeling the heavy atmosphere pressing in from all sides, while listening to the water quietly rippling in the reflecting pools as the binary suns set for the night. The high priestess slowly walks down the promenade, deep in thought, contemplating the fate of her people as their red sun grows larger with each passing day...

Amazing! I'd love to see an update rendition of this taking advantage of the latest software.

Just as dramatic. It's not like I prefer one over the other, but the other one I found a few years ago (need to find it again -- system crash and I lost the copy) that was oriented differently, and instead of a fire plume, it was more like a water and rock plume.

Has anyone seen that image, or something similar? I could have sworn it was a DB image, but I've checked the entire gallery and can't find it.
