Fluorescence
This was my first crack at what was to become my iconic blue mushrooms. I modeled these using Lightwave 5 as an exercise with the lathe tool, then exported them into Bryce for this render (I was still big into Bryce at the time). By the time Lightwave 6 had come out, I was more comfortable rendering scenes in Lightwave itself and I did a new version of the mushrooms. Perhaps you've seen it...

I think you should try redoing this for 2007 cause I've been looking at your work and it's been getting better and better since your first image. so who knows what this thing could look like it may be vivid enough it may pop out of my screen! keep up the good work

This image evokes so much of the sacrifice of war. Here in Australia, major war memorials always have a fire that never goes out - a reminder of the consuming nature of war.

They shall grow not old

As we that are left grow old

Age shall not weary them

Nor the years condemn

At the going down of the sun

And in the morning

We will remember them

Lest We Forget

Shibaozhai
Shibaozhai: Created 1/22/99 using Bryce 3D, and Zenstar's Tree Druid plugin for Ray Dream Studio. After seeing the incredibly realistic work of Bills Munns, I decided to try my hand at rendering an actual place.

Shibaozhai means "stone treasure stronghold" in Chinese. I was watching a special on "The Learning Channel" called "Lost Treasures of the Yangtze", where I saw this temple. The temple is built directly into a solid rock face overlooking the river.

This temple will most likely be underwater when the Chinese government succeeds in damming the Yangtze. Plans are in the works to build a giant wall around the temple, so that it will actually sit in the middle of the swollen river. The likelihood of this actually happening, however, is uncertain. There are many many treasures that will be lost forever when the waters rise and flood the Three Gorges. Read more about it on Wikipedia.

Either way, this is my first render of a real world location. I've taken some liberties (of course), but I hope you enjoy it nonetheless.

It's almost time to renew my subscription, and yes I've had a ball finding something I like every time I visit. And more fun making sure I have 5 versions for the PC, the 2 laptops, the phone and the Zune. But as much as I love the planet scapes, the wonderful building exteriors, the day/night versions, the desert isles and jungles, I keep coming back to Percieval's Choise. Maybe you've decided still lifes aren't your cup of tea, but if you ever change your mind, I'm ready for more like this.

Thanks for a fun year!

"An invitation?"
That's what I think of when I see this - that the swing is an open invitation; out in the middle of nowhere, nobody's in it, no houses (and therefore no property owners) nearby; no playground monitors or spotters or any of the other complicated trappings we've loaded upon the simple act of play. I can climb right on. Nobody's going to run me off or laugh at me for still liking these things when I'm over 50. So...why not? The best of your works always take me to a place where I can shed my inhibitions and be as playful, curious, adventuresome or daring as I like...and this is one of them.

I love this one -- it has such a wonderful fall feel to it, the way the light filters through the trees. If you're going to do more updates, I put in my vote for this one.

I'd love to see a redone version of this for the fourth of July this year. I can't even begin to imagine what it would look like now, with newer software and another 10 years of experience.

Despite the software limitations of the time, this is still a really nice concept, one which could use a good update. Seems like everyone here agrees to. This is why I love this site and your work, just when I think I've seen everything you have to offer, BAM! A blast from the past or a great new render.

I'm amazed that this one's not available in a higher resolution. Is that because it's King of the Early Wallpapers as it is? And it more than holds its own even amidst the later photorealistic ones.

Frio
Frio--Created 2/6/99 using Bryce3D and Poser 3. The concept for this one came from Jordan Strom, who wrote me a while back asking: "You have the Creation image as fire, can you also do one for ice?". I never "take requests", but the idea sounded interesting.

Here it is, Jordan, hope you like it.

Wow, just wow! I love it! I've been wanting you to make more "space" type wallpapers like this but never e-mailed you. I love this one. I hope you spark more ideas for more ones like this. I'd love to see one that maybe has earth, the space station, and the moon in it, or any combo of the three. That'd be awesome! Or even one with the space shuttle docked to the ISS with earth in view.

Dear Ryan,

How many times have I told you son? Futuristic sci-fi images are where it's at. You are obscenely good at them, but I understand you have to "mix it up" a bit for your members. There are few images that you create that I literally want to live in, but this is one of them. Please sir do us a great service and put out more like this in the near future. I mean this sucka was made back in 06 for crying out loud!
