As soon as I posted “Crystalline” folks were asking if I could do a night version. I’m usually all too happy to try one, but this scene presented a few challenges. The main one being that the lighting comes from an “environment map” which is basically a spherical 360 degree photo with extra exposure data encoded.
So to darken this scene I edited that background image to make it look more like night. It’s trickery though (like how they did those old movies…shooting during the day and darkening the film). I’m still learning how to set up lighting in Houdini so I hope it looks ok.
Let me know what you think!

This is one of those rare occasions where I actually like the day time version more. However, I’m curious how this one would look illuminated in purple or even in basic white light.
I like the concept of the color in the crystals for a night render but wonder if other colors like blue, green or purple would look even better.
I won’t disclose *all* of the words I said aloud when I saw the title of this email, but it was something along the lines “NO ——- WAY!”
Linux user here: utilizing the slideshow option of the wallpaper settings. I always just save the newest images and then wait for them to come down the line at some point and it’s going to be a magical day when this one comes in!
